biography

Maha is a true believer and a practitioner in community development, strategic planning and tourism. Twelve out of her 30 years of experience were as a Director of UNIFEM and Jordan River Foundation.

Maha began her career as an English teacher and student counsellor in 1981, then from there became The Head of Documentation Unit at the Arab organization for Standardization and Metrology at the Arab League.

By 1984, Maha started teaching English Literature at The Arab Community College and by 1985, She became a credible Researcher in the Regional Planning Department at The Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation in Amman, Jordan where she successfully completed three years of research. She then became the Chief in the Private Sector and Investment Unit at The Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation and took over the position for four consecutive years.

Maha always believed in development and thus, by 1991, she took charge of the Project Management of The National Women Development Project at the German Technical Cooperation in Jordan for two fruitful years. Following that and until 1997, Maha was National Program Director for the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM/UN Women).

By 1998, Maha worked at a private consultancy company for development and training and then a year later, Maha became the Director of the Public Sector Reform Program at the Government of Jordan. She left this post in the year 2000 to take up the position of Director General at the Jordan River Foundation and Advisor to her Majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah of Jordan for seven consecutive years.

Maha’s career took a great turn by 2007, When she was named the Minister of Tourism and Antiquities in Amman, Jordan and successfully completed three years and by the end of the year 2007, she was an official Senator in the Jordanian Senate.

In 2013, Maha was the Chief Commissioner of the Jordan Investment Board for a productive year and right after that she became the Vice Chairperson of the Jordan Decapolis Group for three years and also became a committee member for ESCWA’S “Justice in the Arab World Report” for two succeeding years.

Currently, Maha is an official founding member for the Civil Alliance Party, and Vice President of The Justice Center for Legal Aid. She is also serving on the board of The National Committee for Women and The Jordan Trail Association.

Maha is highly experienced in the field of the public service and she deeply believes in the power of local communities to change their fate from poverty and injustice to sustainable development and equal opportunities, if and only if, they were given the needed skills and exposure. She is also passionate about gender equality and sustainable tourism.
