Startup World

Jumana Al Darwish is the Co-Founder of the award winning social and international franchise “The Happy Box” and Founder of global brands "The Happy Studio" and ”Happy Hearts Global." She is the visionary and creative, “out of the box” member of the team, bringing an international perspective as the daughter of a UN diplomat. Inspired by the work of her father, who changed the lives of hundreds of thousands of children all over the world, she grew up around the values that meant family was always central to her life. The nature of her father’s job meant that at an early age, Jumana understood the meaning of quality over quantity, and learnt to value her time with her loved ones.

Jumana holds a Bachelor’s degree in Community & Ethnic Studies from Concordia University in Canada, a Masters of Science in Evidence-Based Social Intervention from Oxford University in the UK and a Strategy Execution Programme Certificate from INSEAD in France. With over 10 years of experience in the public and nonprofit sectors, Jumana’s skills as a philanthropist, strategist and fundraiser seemed like the perfect fit working as the Head of Corporate Planning and Development at Dubai Cares.

However, following the birth of her daughter Ayla, she realised she wasn’t spending enough quality time with her family. It was during a family holiday to New York for New Year’s 2014, that Jumana decided to change this and over a life-altering breakfast with Linda (her sister-in law and co-founder), "The Happy Box" was born. Helping other families achieve the same thing would become their passion.

In 2017 and coinciding with the " The Happy Box' ” 3 year anniversary, Jumana opted to expand on the success of the company and establish a secondary lifestyle brand; "The Happy Studio" located at Alserkal Avenue targeting all members of the community regardless of age or gender.

"The Happy Studio" is a pop art community space and design house. As well as being home to "The Happy Box" factory, "The Happy Studio" encourages social interaction between strangers, and offers arts and crafts workshops, curated photoshoots, interactive community installations and a promise of sparkle and fun for everyone who visits.

Jumana has been nominated and is the recipient of numerous awards namely;

- Nominated: Etisalat SMB Business Award, Positive Social Impact Award, 2019

Happiness to Jumana is a series of precious, quality moments with loved ones, whether family or friends. The pursuit of happiness, she believes, is in creating memories that last. In fact, she lives religiously by the immortal words of the Persian poet Omar Khayyam: “Be happy for this moment. This moment is your life.”

It is this philosophy that has always driven the 37-year-old Jordanian, and even more so after the birth of her daughter, Ayla. Today, eight-year-old Ayla is a bundle of energy that keeps Jumana on her toes, and because of Ayla, Jumana turned her entire world upside down.

"The Happy Box" was established in May 2014, and is an award-winning educational and social enterprise, which aims to instill the love of art and creativity amongst children and promote family bonding. Aimed for children aged 3 to 11, each Happy Box is personalized and customized according to the child’s age and includes eight arts and crafts and a book surrounding a specific theme.

Central to the belief that happiness should be universal to all children, "The Happy Box" under its CSR arm has gifted thousands of happy kits amongst disadvantaged children in Egypt, India, Jordan, Kenya, Kuwait, Lebanon, Morocco, Nepal and Syrian Refugees at Zaatari Camp. In 2019, Jumana Al Darwish opted to establish her lifelong dream of establishing a private family foundation and has proceeded with the registration of "Happy Hearts Global" as a CIO under the UK Charity Commission of which will be completed by Q4 of 2019. "Happy Hearts Global" will aim to provide children and in particular girls with access to primary education and art therapeutic and rehabilitation programs globally. Hearts that give are truly the happiest.
