Shaden Khallaf is an international expert on refugee and humanitarian affairs, and an advocate for human dignity and women’s empowerment. She has been serving as Senior Policy Advisor at the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) during the biggest displacement crisis in contemporary history, and she continues to lead regional policy analysis and design for the Middle East and North Africa. Shaden’s expertise includes international human rights law, post-conflict transitions and peace-building, gender policy, the protection of refugee women and children, advocacy and communications, multi-stakeholder coordination, the prevention of violent extremism, and the sustainable development goals. She has spearheaded innovative partnerships with civil society, academia and the private sector through catalyzing and convening the MENA Civil Society Network for Displacement. Shaden has lectured at the Department of Law and at the Center for Migration and Refugee Studies at the School of Global Affairs and Public Policy of the American University in Cairo, as well as at the Center for Strategic Studies at the University of Jordan. She has been a fellow at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva, has numerous publications on displacement, and is a regular speaker in academic and diplomatic circles, contributing to bridging policy research with practitioner know-how. Shaden was selected among 100 Alumni of the Century by the American University in Cairo, as well as a “Women of Egypt Hero,” and selected among 365 Inspiring Arab Women by Women in Business Arabia.
